About Sigma Security

As organisations become more distributed and technologically intensive, they seek to make their data more widely available and accessible, yet that increases the need for securing those data, a seemingly contradictory goal. The need is especially acute in organisations that deal with increasingly global customer markets, or that work to tight deadlines, for their networks need to be accessible and secure for far-flung employees and consultants who require round-the-clock connectivity to corporate e-mail and corporate data.

Whether employees are travelling, visiting customer sites, or working long hours on critical deliverables, they need access to e-mail and other corporate information sources at all times, and whatever security approach the organisation takes needs to respect the sensitivity of privileged information.

Tailoring Security Solutions

Sigma Security works with its clients to reduce security risks by using technology as an enabler for both IT security planning and implementation. Our focus is on sourcing and utilising the right technologies to help our customers manage IT security and minimise risk, which enables IT managers to concentrate on adding value through core activities from a stable and secure working platform.

Without a clear IT security strategy and serious thought given to the implications of technology choices, any IT infrastructure is vulnerable to misuse and security breaches. Sigma has a proven track-record in working proactively with client organisations to develop their security policies and procedures to help underpin their IT infrastructure.

Sigma Security develops clear security strategies for our clients that encourage best practice and risk management in their business processes. Our services are geared to ensuring that not only do our clients have the right security products in place but that they bring commercial benefit in the areas of security, disaster recovery, and business continuity.

Some of Sigma Security's products and services include the following:

  • firewall, IDS/IDP, content filtering, AV, SPAM filtering
  • secure SSL & VPN access for remote users
  • penetration testing
  • software auditing and security gap analysis
  • IT security policies and procedures creation
  • risk assessment and data asset auditing
  • ISO 17799 information security project planning
  • ISO 17799 implementation workshops

Industry-leading Security Partners

Sigma understands that our customers require security solutions that offer the assurance of tested products developed by vendors with solid experience in the security field. That's why we have partnered with SafeNet, a leading vendor of enterprise security systems, and Fortinet, specialists at developing platforms for security at the network edge.

SSL VPN Capabilities

To address many of the security concerns inherent in environments with distributed access, SafeNet has developed SSL VPN (secure socket layer virtual private network) solutions that offer reliability and ease of deployment while providing unparalleled security.

Organisations with demanding security requirements have come to prefer SSL VPN as their security solution since SSL VPNs enable the protection of data transmitted on encrypted links between corporate networks and remote users. Moreover, organisations can control access to their data via the authentication capabilities inherent in SSL.

Security Return on Investment

The SafeNet solution offered by Sigma Security has minimal impact on customer networks and requires little administration and maintenance to keep operational. Its Web-based administration interface allows IT departments to quickly configure the SSL VPN and integrate it into the existing network. Moreover, the administration interface allows IT departments to manage SSL certificates centrally.

Beyond allowing widespread but secure access to corporate intranets, the SafeNet solution lets organisations convert their intranets into extranets through SSL protection for all Web-enabled applications, while an authentication gateway controls access to all information published on the site.

The Changing Nature of Threats

Traditional methods of protecting corporate networks are now proving to be inadequate as threats evolve. Determined attackers now use e-mail messages, file transfers, loaded Web pages, and VPN links, the common apparatus of business, to infect networks with worms and viruses, and to introduce inappropriate content. Such content-based attacks bypass conventional firewalls, since firewalls weren't designed to analyse and handle application-level network traffic. as a result, content-based threats spread more quickly and do more damage than more lowly-evolved ones. Fortinet realises that software-based approaches to threat prevention are often complex and expensive, and often slow network traffic, rendering applications too slow for real-time communication.

Protection at the Edge in Real Time

Fortinet's approach to confronting network threats was to develop a new type of platform capable of meeting threats at the network edge - while still allowing mission-critical network applications to function at their normal speeds. The resulting FortiGate platform with its ASIC-based architecture provides superior protection at the network edge, with faster processing, and at lower cost, while avoiding the traditional limitations of firewalls, VPN gateways, and software-centred content filtering and antivirus systems.

Since traditional software-based antivirus systems are designed to handle non-real-time data, they are at a disadvantage when faced with virus and worm infections that increasingly come through Web pages and similar real-time applications, for performing scans in real time usually degrades network performance. The Fortinet solution offered by Sigma Security enables real-time antivirus protection while allowing network traffic to move at high speeds.

Seamless Network Integration

Beyond maintaining your network's performance while protecting it from external threats, Sigma Security's Fortinet solution can be integrated seamlessly into your network and works transparently with any existing firewalls. It also offers policy-based capabilities to manage network access.
